| The KAMBAYASHI Memorial Hall contains a part ofgNAGAYA-MONh, a long house gate built in the style of EDO period. SHUNSHO KAMBAYASHI was an influential tea master of the EDO period. The hall exhibits many materials pertaining to Uji grenn tea and its history. SANKYUAN Uji Tea Laboratory dosplays letters which DAIMYOS (feudal lords) sent to the KAMBAYSHI family famous for providing the DAIMYO`S tea. Also on display are stone mills used to make Uji green tea, and excellent accessories indispensable to Japanese tea culture.gASAHI-YAKIhpottery developed with Uji green tea, and having a history of more than 400 years, Asahi-yakihmay be viewed one of the seven great Enshu kilns. daughter of the chief adviser to the Emperor MICHINAGA FUJIWARA. This literary classic contains 54 chapters and is recognized as one of the world`s oldest love stories. The first half of THE TALE OF GENJI deals with the hero HIKARU GENJI. Blessed with beauty and talent, he a prince of the Emperor, experiences many love affairs and gains prosperity, yet still suffers from transient affairs of this life and love. In the latter half, the story takes place during the period after HIKARU`s death. It is a tragedy about his son KAORU, his grandson NIOU-NO-MIYA and three daughters of the ruined nobleman -OKIMI,NAKA-NOI-KIMI and UKIFUNE. The last ten chapters -gHASHIHIMEh,gSHIIGAMOTOh,gAGEMAKIh,gSAWARABIh,gYADORIGIh,gAZUMAYAh,gUKIFUNEh,gKAGEROUh,gTENARAIhandgYUME-NO-UKI -HASHIh are called the gUji Chptersh,as they are mainly set in Uji. In Uji, there are stone monuments of the gUji Chptersh. These monuments were erected by local scholars and devotees of the story. It is not clear when they were erected, but even now many lovers of the story visit these monuments, and a STAMP RALLY, designed for the purpose of visiting them, is held every autumn. We also founded gMurasaki Shikibu Prize for literaturehin 1991, which is for all the women writters in Japan. |

MIMUROTOJI TEMPLE MIMUROTOJI Temple is well-known as the 10th of 33 sacred places of KAN-NON (the Goddess of Mercy) of Western Japan. The existing main hall of the temple was rebuilt in 1814, but the temple is said to have originally been built in the 700`s. A historic of thegUji Chaptersh,is found in the grounds of the temples. UJIGAMI SHRINE <World Heritage> UJIGAMI Shrine is dedicated to Prince UJI-NO-WAKI-IRATSUKO, and Emperors OJIN and NINTOKU (5th century A.D.) According to NIHON-SHOKI, UJI-NO-WAKI-IRATSUKO was a tragic Imperial prince, who, as the Prince of OJIN Emperor, was driven to commit suicide due to the confict with his brother Emperor NINTOKU over succession to the Imperial Throne. The main shrine (a national treasure) is valued as the oldest shrine in Japan, built in the HEIAN Period. |

UJI CITY BOTANICAL PARK This 10 hectare park is located near the Yamashiro Sports Park. At the Uji Municipal Botanical Park, there are 530 kinds of tropical and subtropical flowers, including Ficus Retusa, Palm trees and bougainvilleas. In total, there are 7,000 flowers within the greenhouse and Park grounds. The Botanical Park is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy beautiful scenery. A specialty of the park is a floral tapestry. On a steep 62m by 18m mountain stircase there are about 3,700 planters filled with colouful flower arrangements. THE UJI RIVER AND UJI BRIDGE The Uji River is the only river that originates from Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. It has been an important waterway between Ohmi and Osaka since ancient times. Follwing the construction of the Uji Bridge by the Buddhist Priest DOTO in 646, the bridge became a strategically important geographic location. At that time, the Uji area was the primary junction for land and water traffic in the Kinki district. The Uji Bridge is said to be one of Three Famous Old Bridges of Japan. ThegSAN-NO-MAh, protruding toward the upper steram, is a main feature of the bridge. The present bridge constructed in March 1996 is in harmony with the historic image of the bridge and surrounding views. |
